GIS is not paid separately. It is added to your OAS pension as one payment, on the same day each month, by direct deposit into your bank account or by cheque in the mail. If your deposit looks like a single amount, that is normal: the OAS and GIS components are combined, and your T4A(OAS) slip at tax time breaks them out.

Payment dates left in 2026

Earlier 2026 dates were 28 January, 25 February, 27 March, 28 April, 27 May, 26 June, 29 July, 27 August and 25 September. Direct deposit normally lands on the issue date itself; cheques mailed out can take several business days longer.

Direct deposit or cheque?

Direct deposit is the safer choice: no mail delays, no lost cheques, and the money is there on the payment date. You can sign up for direct deposit at any time through My Service Canada Account, and you can have it paid into an account in Canada, the United States or another participating country. If you did not choose direct deposit, a cheque is mailed during the last three business days of each month.

If a payment does not arrive

Wait five business days past the payment date before contacting Service Canada — cheques in particular can be slow, and a report filed too early cannot be actioned. When you do contact Service Canada, have your Social Insurance Number ready and know which payment is missing. If you have moved, check first that Service Canada has your current address and banking details: a payment sent to an old address or a closed account is the most common cause of a "missing" payment, and it is fixed by updating your details, not by reapplying for GIS.

Tax note. You pay no tax on GIS itself, but you must still report it: it appears in box 21 of your T4A(OAS) slip, goes on line 14600 of your return, and is then deducted at line 25000 when taxable income is worked out. That is what makes it tax-free — reporting it, not hiding it. Failing to report it is not a strategy; failing to file at all is what stops the July renewal.
General information only. This page explains the Guaranteed Income Supplement in plain English. It is not legal, financial, or tax advice, and it cannot decide whether you qualify. Only Service Canada can decide a claim. Rates and rules change over time — the figures here are for October to December 2026 unless another period is stated — so always confirm the current position with Service Canada or Canada.ca before you act on it.
